The project has the starting point from the longest lifespan of building parts - The structure (Based on 6S Model - Steward Brand). Meanwhile other building parts and materials are not quite difficult to be reused (Nordic Built Component Reuse - Vandkunsten Architects) , concrete structure is still a challenge for designers to build new from old.This raises a question: How can concrete load bearing component - in this particular case - the hollowcore slabs can be reused or recycled to form a new type of building structure?
The idea comes from the vast amount of hollow core slabs - which are all in good conditions and have good modular dimensions from not only the two donor buildings but also other existing buildings. This reflects the fact that hollowcore slabs are in favored for construction in Europe during the modern time, therefore studying the use of this materials can not only fullfill the requirements of the studio but also serve the potential use for bigger scenarios beyond that.
From this initial thinking, a new concrete structure that is entirely made from the old hollow core slabs, strengthened with used steel tubes from scarfolding structure (1) and connected by metal joints (2) are proposed to create a typical structure module that can stand alone and have the capacity to be extended in two directions - verticaly and horizontaly (3)
The typical structure module then will be filled with different flat formation explained in the right diagrams. The simplicity and clearance of this structure opens rooms for different adaptation and modification in use. For example, the laundry or common room/ shared areas (4) can be put into the space instead of flat, or the floor structure can be extended into the existing lanscape (5).
